This guide is intended for program managers who want to create a new course within the examination program. This 'shell' serves as the framework in which all the content details will be added later. In this step, you register all the basic information of the course, such as its name, language, credits, and offering period.
Note: The course content (such as learning objectives, teaching methods, and assessment activities) is not added at this stage. This will be done later by the course coordinator.
Make sure to fill in all fields carefully, as this information is transferred to Osiris and forms the basis of the examination program.
When should you create a new course?
Some changes to an existing course are not allowed within the same course, as they affect the registration in study contracts and other logistical systems such as TimeEdit and Osiris.
Changes that are allowed within an existing course:
- Registration period
- Description and learning objectives
- Involved staff
- Teaching methods and activities
- Assessment activities
Changes that are not allowed (require a new course):
- Course name (both Dutch and English)
- Language of instruction
- Number of credits
- For assessments: assessment type, weight, and pass mark
Note: If you want to change one of these non-editable elements, you must create a new course. This ensures correct registration in both TimeEdit and Osiris.
Creating a course from the Examination Program
Creating a new course starts from the examination program in TimeEdit. Open the correct examination program, select the relevant study year, and choose the component to which you want to add a course.
1. Click +Add
2. Choose Add Course. The input screen for the new course will open.
In this screen, fill in the following information:
- Dutch and English names of the course (official designation)
- Optionally, indicate if you want to copy an existing course. This is useful when creating a new course due to changes in assessment type. Copying transfers the basic information so you don’t need to enter it again.
- Academic year in which the course takes place
- Crucial for cum laude – check Yes or No
- Essential for Honours – check Yes or No
- Finally, you can add entry requirements, such as the number of credits a student must have earned to take this course
Click the info icon (i) for more information about each field.!
Workflow for creating a new course
A workflow will open—these are the steps or activities that need to be completed to carry a process from start to finish. This workflow consists of several pages that you will go through step by step. Each page contains specific elements of the new course that must be filled in.
1. Adding information for a new course
You start by creating a new course from the examination program. Some information may already be added or copied from another course. You now complete the course data:
- Official name in Dutch and English
- Short name in Dutch and English (shown in the Osiris course catalog and visible to students)
- Academic year
- Language of instruction
- Number of credits
Tip: Make sure the naming is correct: the official name appears on the diploma, the short name is used in communication with students.
2. Aanschuifonderwijs (open enrollment)
On this page, indicate whether the course is suitable for open enrollment by checking the box.
When checked, the course will be available in the webshop for students.
Note: If unsure at this moment, it can be adjusted later.
3. Aanbodperiode (offering period)
Here, you determine when and where the course is offered.
Click +Add and create a separate row for each location and period. Example: Period 1 in Deventer and Period 1 in Enschede are two separate rows.
Tip: Make sure all combinations of location and period are added.
4. Betrokkenen (involved staff)
Add the relevant staff on this page:
- Course coordinator (mandatory; will later add course content)
- Examiners (can assess the course in Osiris if authorized)
- Lecturers (gain access to the course in Osiris)
Note: If you do not yet know who will fill these roles, they can be added later.
5. Toetsschema (test schedule)
1. Add a new assessment by clicking +Add. The next screen will open.
2. You have two options:
- Copy – Copy data from an existing assessment
- Create new – Fully enter data for a new assessment
3. Fill in all required fields (marked with a star *):
- Code: Automatically generated based on assessment type
- Naam name (NL): This name is transferred to Osiris
- Naam name (EN): Also transferred to Osiris
- Osiris toetscode Osiris test code: Must be unique within the course; essential for Osiris integration
- Studiepunten credits: Number of ECTS linked to the assessment; can be 0
- Aantal pogingen attempts per year: Default is 2
- Weging weight: Indicates how much this assessment counts toward the final course grade
- Cesuur pass mark: The score at which the assessment is passed
- Beoordeling grading: Choose numeric grade or pass/fail
- Type: Select from a predefined list (e.g., assessment, digital test, practical)
Note: Choose the correct type, as this affects how it is processed in Osiris. Be careful—once the course is finalized, a new assessment type requires a new course. - Toetsduur test duration: Enter the duration of the assessment
- Gepersonaliseerd personalized: When a personalized title should appear on the transcript, different from the course name
- Toetscriteria test criteria (NL/EN): To be determined
- Bijzonderheden notes: Any additional information about the course
Ensure all basic data is correct and complete so that the course coordinator can add the detailed content.
6. Afronden (finalizing)
Finally, complete the workflow by clicking Finalize.
Once you are done managing the examination program—which includes the course—the assigned course coordinator will automatically receive the “Cursus beheren” task on their TimeEdit dashboard on the scheduled date. From that moment, the course coordinator can further complete the course with:
- Descriptions
- Learning objectives
- Teaching methods
- Activities linked to tests and teaching methods
