Why subtitles?

Subtitles can improve and enrich the learning process, as they make it possible to:

  • make videos accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, thereby complying with Dutch Web Guidelines (website is in Dutch).
  • make videos more widely usable for non-native speakers.
  • enrich metadata and search capabilities: it is possible to search within the subtitles.

Why transcription?

A transcription is a word-for-word representation of what is said in the video/audio file. A transcription can improve and enrich the learning process, as it allows you to:

  • use a transcription for qualitative research in which the content of the speakers needs to be analysed.
  • download a transcript and edit it in other programmes.
  • not only watch a video but also read the transcription below the video.

How to request subtitles/transcription?

  1. Go to My Media at media.saxion.nl.
  2. Open the desired video and click on the three dots menu button below the video
  3. Click the Reach captions & enrich option.
  1. Select the desired translation method under Service type: *Machine or **Professional or ***Machine English Translation.
  2. Select the source language under Source Media Language.
  3. If desired, add instructions to a Professional request.
  4. Click on Order.

*Machine – unlimited requests

Automatically generated subtitles can be requested for videos in the following languages: Dutch, English, German and Mandarin Chinese. The subtitles will appear in the video after a duration of approximately 5 times the length of the video after the request has been made. Depending on the audio quality and the speaker's pronunciation, the accuracy of the subtitles averages around 90 percent. After the subtitles have been delivered, the requester or co-editor can manually adjust them in an editor.

**Professional – requests via moderator

Professional subtitling can be requested for videos in the following languages: Dutch, English and German. Once approved, it takes an average of four days for the subtitles to appear in the video. The request will be approved if it meets the criteria for professional subtitling. The applicant will be notified of this or may be asked to provide additional information.

***Machine English Translation

Machine Translation can only be requested if source captions are already available. First request and generate the source captions, then you can translate them into English subtitles. Once requested, the English subtitles will appear in about five times the video’s length.

  • Leave the Service type set to Machine and select Translation under Feature.
  • Under Target Translation language, select English.
  • Click on Order.
  • You will now be asked if you want to Resubmit the caption request: do this!
  • Wait a moment and the English subtitles will appear

Criteria for professional subtitling

  • Indispensable for open online material
  • Sustainable use
  • Reach a large (international) target group
  • High quality of the video
  • Not available for transcriptions of audio files if there are insufficient hours available

Adjust subtitles / transcript in editor

  1. Click on the Three dots menu button below the video, followed by Edit
  2. Click on the Captions tab, followed by Edit Captions
  1. Change the subtitles if desired.
  2. Click Save to save the changes, followed by Yes.
  3. Click Back in the top right corner.
  4. The subtitles will now appear in the video.

Captions in the player

  • Click on the CC icon in the player to turn subtitles on or off.
  • Click on the cogwheel to change the language if multiple captions are available.

Transcription in the player and download

  • Click on the transcript icon at the top right of the player.
  • Download the script by clicking on the three dots in the top right corner and selecting “Download current transcript”.
