What is Turnitin and what should I be aware of?
Saxion uses Turnitin in Brightspace to check a student's work for overlap with other sources, such as websites and submissions from other students at Saxion or other colleges and universities, both domestic and international.
The instructor decides whether a student's product should also be checked for overlap with other sources and works. If this is the case for an assignment, the plagiarism check by Turnitin will be enabled, and after submission, a similarity report (plagiarism report) will be generated showing the degree of overlap with other sources and works.
When using the work of others, correct source citation is mandatory. You can cite the source with different reference styles. Each style gives you an opportunity to cite your sources appropriately. The most commonly used reference style in the Netherlands is the APA style. At Saxion we also use APA. More information can be found here. Some courses use a different reference style. You will receive information about this from your own academy.
To prevent improper use of Turnitin, students cannot view their similarity reports. If plagiarism is suspected, the teacher will report this to the examination board and the similarity report can be shared with you. A discussion with the examination committee always follows.
When you upload a Turnitin assignment for the first time, you must first accept the Turnitin End-User License Agreement.
Submitting an assignment for plagiarism check

The instructor first assesses the percentage of overlap and, if necessary, contacts the student. Afterward, the instructor evaluates the content of the product.
