The minibar
When you log in to Brightspace, you land on the homepage. At the top right of the screen you will find a basic menu, the minibar.
- View the list of your courses (Course Selector). You can search, select and pin a course to your homepage.
- Message alerts: Under the envelope icon you can see if you have email notifications. You can recognize a new notification by the orange dot.
- Subscription alerts: under Discussions you set whether you want to receive notifications of new replies to discussion posts. Click on the comment bubble to view the responses. You can recognize a new notification by the orange dot.
- Update alerts: via update alerts you are informed at a glance of, for example, uploaded files and submitted assignments. To do this, click on the bell icon. You can recognize a new notification by the orange dot.
- Under your own name or initials/profile picture you can view the settings regarding your profile, notifications and account.
Students also receive update alerts as soon as you add new content to a course or publish announcements, grades or deadlines. They also see an orange dot when there are new reports.
Your personal homepage
When you log in to Brightspace, you land on your personal homepage. Every personal homepage has the same layout (regardless of whether you are a student or instructor.
- You will see an overview of your twelve most recently visited courses. NB: Brightspace will increase the number of courses on your personal homepage to twelve, even if you have not pinned twelve courses.
- Some courses contain icons with a number in an orange frame. These icons represent Activities (Assignments, Discussions and Quizzes). The number in the orange frame indicates how many unread items you have within that Activity. For example, the number next to the document icon indicates how many unread student files you have submitted.
- Click the name of a course to open it.
- Click View All Courses to view all courses.
- Click on Pinned to see an overview of your pinned courses.
- In your personal Calendar you can see activities from all your courses. Under Upcoming events you will see the activities displayed in a list. Click Calendar to open the calendar.
- Under Announcements you will see central announcements, for example about maintenance of web lectures (so no announcements about specific courses). You delete (and thereby archive) an announcement by clicking on the cross at the top right of the announcement. Click Announcements or Show All Announcements to see all active and archived (dismissed) announcements.
Do you want to navigate back to your homepage from another page? Then click on the Saxion logo in the top left corner of your screen.
Course home
You navigate to a course by:
- Clicking on a course on the home page. You land on Course Home.
- Clicking on the name of the desired course in the Course Selector. You land on Course Home.
To return to the Course Home from another page, click on Course Home in the navigation bar or on the course name at the top of the screen.
- In de Course Banner zie je de titel van de cursus. Met de course banner personaliseer je je cursus en maak je hem gemakkelijk herkenbaar en vindbaar.
- Onder Announcements zie je de meldingen specifiek voor de cursus. Via announcements communiceer je vooraf en tijdens de cursus met de studenten.
- In de Calendar zie je activiteiten in de cursus, zoals bijeenkomsten, deadlines van opdrachten en te lezen materiaal.
The navigation menu of the course is the same for all Saxion courses and we call it the navigation bar. From here you navigate to:
- Content: this is where you divide your course into modules and post course material.
- Grades: here you can set up the Gradebook and assess assignments.
- Course Tools: here you create Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes and Rubrics that you can then place under Content. You will also find the Kaltura Media Gallery here. You will also find the options for managing your education here. You can view, among other things, who the participants in your course are and what role they have with Classlist and you can manage groups.
- Via Course Admin you open a page from which you can navigate to all the options that Brightspace has.
- Help: via the help button you navigate to this support site. Here you can find additional information about topics you need help with.
