What is the MS Teams Course Connector?

Aangepast op

The MS Teams Course Connector may not be visible in your course. Academies have the option to enable or disable this feature for the entire academy.

Microsoft Teams is linked to your Brightspace course through the Microsoft Teams Course connector. This is an integrated link that can create a corresponding Team within Microsoft Teams for a course. In addition to creating the Team, the connector also adds teachers and students to your Teams environment.

In this article, we explain what the connector is. In another article, you can see the various applications and some advice.

How do I create a single Team for a course?

A Team is not created for your course by default. As a teacher, you and your colleagues decide whether a Team is useful/necessary for the course. Teams can be created from the Microsoft Teams widget on the Course Home. The widget shown below can be found at the bottom of the Course Home. Please note: All students and teachers come together in one environment. Read this article first to learn more.

How do I create a Team for each section within a course?

If you have sections within your course (for example, classes/study groups), you can create a Team for each section in the course. Simply check “Create a Team for each section” when you create the Team. Please note: This may result in many different team environments for this single educational unit.  Please read this article first.

Who will be assigned which role within the Team?

When creating the Team, the users from the course Classlist are also automatically added to the Team. The role that a user has within the course determines the role that a user will have in the corresponding Team. The table below shows all Brightspace roles that lead to a role in Microsoft Teams. If a Brightspace role is not listed in the table below, a user with that role will not be added to the Team.

Moderate the standard rights of students within a Team

Within Teams, there are various ‘types of Teams’. The type of Team created by the Course connector is a ‘standard Team’. In a standard Team, a member of a Team has quite a lot of rights. These include adding other members, creating (private) channels, and linking other applications to a Team.

For most applications of Teams in education, it is not desirable for students to have so many rights. It is therefore recommended that you review the Member Permissions immediately after creating the Team and adjust them to your own requirements for this course.

The Member Permissions and other settings can be found by going to the Settings tab in the ‘Manage Team’ menu. See these steps for more information.
