In this article, you can read how you can attach a grade item to a discussion topic.
If you want to assess a discussion, you can use a grade item. By attaching a grade item to a discussion topic, Brightspace will automatically include the assessment of the discussion topic in the final grade.

- Navigate to Course Tools in the navbar of your course.
- Click Discussions.
- Click the fold-out arrow next to the discussion topic you want to connect to a grade item, then click Edit Topic.
- If you wish to create a new Discussion topic, click New.
1. Click Ungraded at Grade out of.
- Fill in the amount of points, 1 point for Complies/ Doesn't comply
- or link a rubric to the discussion and enter the maximum number of points for the rubric
- Create a new gradebook entry or
- Link the Topic to an existing Gradebook item.
If a Grade Item is already linked to another item, it will not appear in the drop-down screen.
Under Evaluation & Feedback you can make the following choices:
- Allow assessment of individual posts when you want to assess the posted posts in a topic individually. You can then use the drop-down screen to select the way you want to grade the posts. The Discussion topic will receive a grade based on the rating of all individual posts. If you do not check this option, a student will receive a grade based on the entire topic.
- When you have checked the rating of individual posts, there is the option to include unevaluated posts in the calculated topic score calculation as zero. This option counts posts that have not been graded in the grade and will carry a weight of 0 points.
Finally, there is the option that gives students the opportunity to assess each other's topics. You can choose from 3 options.
Finally, click Save and Close
The key icon in Discussion Overview will appear when linking a Grade Item is successful.
It is only possible to attach a grade item of the type Numeric to a discussion. Grade items of other types will not appear in the drop-down menu.
The key icon in the Discussions overview will show you whether you have linked a discussion to a grade item.
