Recover accidentally deleted data

In Brightspace, data that has been accidentally deleted can be recovered in several ways. This depends on the type of object and the recovery options available. Below is an overview of which data you can restore yourself and which you must restore together with Functional Management and Brightspace employees.

Data you can restore yourself in Brightspace

Certain course items can be restored by the School Support role or the Lecturer A role at any time, regardless of how long ago they were deleted:

Be aware! The review of an assignment can't be restored once deleted.

How to recover deleted discussions:

  1. Go to 'Discussions' via 'Course Tools'.
  2. Click on 'Discussions List'.
  3. Click on 'More Actions' and then 'Restore'.
  4. You will see a list of deleted forums. Click on 'Restore' behind the desired forum.

How to recover deleted assignments:

  1. Go to 'Assignments' via 'Course Tools'
  2. Click on 'More Actions' and then on 'Event Log'
  3. Click on the 'Deleted' tab
  4. Click on 'Restore' next to the assignment you want to restore

How to recover deleted submissions:

  1. Go to 'Assignments' via 'Course Tools' and
  2. Click on the intended assignment
  3. Click on 'More Actions' and click on 'Submission Log'
  4. Click on the 'Deleted' tab
  5. Click on 'Restore' next to the submission you want to restore.

How to recover deleted Grade Items:

A Grade Item is a column in a Gradebook

  1. Go to 'Grades' in the navbar
  2. Click on 'Manage Grades'
  3. Select 'More Actions' and click on 'View Event Log'.
  4. Click on 'Restore' next to the grade item you want to restore.

How to recover deleted Announcements:

  1. Click on the arrow 'Announcements' on the Course Home page of your course.
  2. Select 'Go to Announcements Tool'.
  3. Click on 'More Actions' andclick on 'Restore'.
  4. Select the announcement(s) you want to restore and click on 'Restore'.

How to recover deleted Quiz attempts:

  1. Go to 'Quizzes' via 'Course Tools'
  2. Click on the arrow next to the quiz of which you want to restore an attempt and select 'Attempt Logs'
  3. Click on 'Restore' next to the attempt you want to restore.

How to recover deleted Groups:

  1. Go to 'Groups' via 'Course Tools'
  2. Click on 'Recycle Bin'
  3. Select the groups you want to restore and click on 'Restore'
  4. Click on 'Restore' again in the confirmation message.

Data that can be restored by Functional Management via a notification to Brightspace:

Some course items cannot be restored within Brightspace and require creating a notification with Brightspace. The following items can be recovered within 30 days of deletion:

  • Assignments - Overwritten submissions: Required are the name of the assignment, the user involved, and the date of the submission. Please note: this is only possible for submissions that have been overwritten when the 'Only the most recent submission is kept' setting is enabled.
  • Module/subject content: Exact name of the module(s) or subject(s) and the course code are required. Please note: this only applies to deleted items; it is not possible to return to a specific date/time.
  • Content (Management) files: File names and the time the files existed are required.
  • Quizzes/Self-Assessments/Surveys: Course code, object name, and whether there were user attempts are required. When a quiz/survey is restored, all associated attempts are automatically restored.
  • Quiz questions: Course code, the name of the quiz from which the questions were removed, and details about the question are required.
  • Sections: Course code, section name, and date removed are required. Please note: sections that are in use cannot be deleted.

Support request guidelines:

  • Reinstatement requests must be submitted as soon as possible after removal. Brightspace can only recover data within 30 days of deletion.
  • Objects are only restored to their original organizational unit; transferring data between organizational units is not possible.
  • Objects are only restored if the user cannot do this themselves.
  • Full course restores are not performed. A list of specific components must be submitted.
