While setting up your course, you can view and walk through it as if you were a student. This allows you to test whether everything is working properly and/or you are happy with the way you have designed your course. There are two ways in which you can preview your course as student:
When viewing Quizzes as a student, you have an additional option:
To see the student view of your course, use the View as Student feature. To really experience the course from a student's perspective and thus be able to perform all actions a student can perform, use a Dummy student: a fictional student you can add to your course. Using a Dummy student is the most comprehensive way to view your course as a student.
- Unlike regular students, future and inactive courses do show when you view your course as a Dummy student. This way, teachers can use Dummy students while building the course (often before the start date or while it is inactive).
- For testing notifications, you cannot use Dummy students because they have a no-reply email address.
Using the View as Student function
1. Click on your name in the upper right corner of the screen, then click View as Student.

- You will be returned to the Course Homepage. You can see from the double-arrow icon that you are now viewing the course as a student. This also means that the editing tools you have (in your own role) are now temporarily unavailable.
- Navigate to the course components (Content, Course Tools, Grades) you would like to view as student
- If you want to close View as Student mode, you need to click on your profile and then click 'X'. You will then again be returned to the Course Homepage.
The View as Student option provides an overview of what a student can see of the course. However, you cannot do everything in this mode. For example, you cannot complete a quiz or submit an assignment in this mode. For those applications, use a Dummy Student.
Only items set to Visible are displayed in View as Student mode. Items set to Hidden, or only saved as Draft, are not visible in View as Student mode. This corresponds to the actual visibility of the content for students.
If a (sub) module is set to Visible, with a release date in the future, students can see the name of the module, but don't have access yet. You can use this intentionally: you can give students a hint of what's coming without actually giving them access in the course content. Items with a release date are also not visible in View as Student mode.
Using a Dummy student
Before you can use a dummy student, you must add it to your course. You do this in the following way:
- In your course, go to Classlist
- Click on Add Participants
- Choose Add existing users
- Now under Add Existing Users, search for Dummy
- You will now see a list of all Dummy students, add only the dummy student belonging to your academy (the academy is added to the last name of the Dummy student)
- Note! It is important that the Dummy student is added with the role Dummy Student.
- Then click on Enrol Selected Users
- Again, go to Classlist
- Click on the All tab
- Now click the drop-down arrow next to the dummy student and click Impersonate.
- You will see the following message:

- Click Yes.
You now log in as a dummy student. You will see this also at the top right of your screen. You can now do everything a real student can do, such as submitting assignments and signing up for groups. As a teacher, you can add the dummy student to groups and sections to test release conditions.
How to stop impersonating a dummy student

- Click on the Dummy student's name in the upper right corner of the minibar.
- Click on the cross.
How do I preview my Quizzes as student

- After having completed the quiz, tick at the bottom of the page whether you want this trial attempt to be evaluated or not. (Please note: Trial attempts do not count for the class statistics of the quiz).
