Bulk Enroll or Unenroll Students via the Groups Tool (CSV Import)

Aangepast op

Please note! The groups must be created first. You can also create them in bulk. For instructions on how to do this, please see the following article: How do I create groups in bulk for group assignments? Once you have created the groups, follow the current step-by-step instructions to add students to the groups.

Brightspace allows you to bulk enroll or unenroll users from groups using a CSV or TXT file.

This functionality is available within the Groups tool and can be used to both add and remove users from existing groups.

  1. In your Brightspace course, go to the Groups tool (Course Tools > Groups).
  2. Click the arrow next to the category name and select Import.
  1. Prepare the CSV File
  • The CSV file must contain the following columns: Action (either ENROLL or UNENROLL), Username, Organisation Defined ID, Group Name, Group Code.
  • The file can be created manually, or by using the Download template CSV file option available within the Groups tool, or by using the file below.

Make sure the file is comma-separated in Excel, so that you can easily paste the data.

  1. Select column A.
  2. In Excel, go to Data.
  3. Select Text to Columns.
  4. Select Delimited and click Next.
  5. Check Comma and click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
  • The required fields are: Action, Username, and Group Code. Other fields are optional and can be left blank (but keep the column intact).
  • If you are unenrolling users, make sure the Action field is set to "UNENROLL".
  • Ensure that all fields are comma-separated, and that each line represents one record (one action per user per group).
  • This information is also available under "View instructions on creating your CSV file" in the import interface.

Now save the file as Comma Separated Values (.csv).

Next, open the saved CSV file in Notepad. Use the Find and Replace function to replace all semicolons (;) with commas (,) at once.

  1. Select Edit → Replace.
  2. In Find what, enter a semicolon (;).
  3. In Replace with, enter a comma (,).
  4. Select Replace All.
  5. Save the file again.
  1. Upload the prepared CSV file via 'Choose File'.
  2. Click Import file to upload the prepared CSV file.
  • If the file contains no errors, the enrollments or unenrollments will be processed and the results will be displayed.
  • If any errors are found, the process will be halted and you will receive a summary of the error messages.
