In this item, it is explained how to set up conditional requirements for an assignment. This could, for instance, be adhering to the APA bibliography, language requirements, spelling, and grammar.
It can be done in three ways with different (dis)advantages.
The assessment of conditional requirements in a separate column in Brightspace comes with extra actions for the instructor. If you want to work with conditional requirements, we suggest using the first option.
1. Include it in the primary rubric
This is the most simple method. With this method you add one or more conditional criteria without points to the scoring rubric. This allows you to assess both the conditions and the content of the submitted product in one rubric.
If the student does not meet the conditions, overwrite the final grade with, for example, a 0 or a 1 (depending on the agreements made within the academy). The student will not receive a grade, but can view the feedback. Agree within the program whether this means that the student must take an official resit at the new submission point.
In order to assign a 0 to both criteria, Scoring must be set to Custom Points.
Below is a detailed example of what it looks like when the conditional criteria have been added to the scoring rubric.
In the screenshot below you can see how a student scored 100 points on the scoring rubric but did not meet the conditions. Therefore, the Overall Grade has been overwritten with a 0.
2. Work with a secondary rubric
When you want to use the conditional requirements, you can link these to an assignment as a second rubric. The advantage of this is that you can fill out the conditional and the content rubric right after each other as they are linked to the same assignment.

You can read how to create a conditional rubric here.
The disadvantage is that you will only see one rubric in the Gradebook (the Default Scoring Rubric). To see whether a student has met the requirements, you will have to open the submission attempt.
1. Under Evaluation & Feedback you will see that there are 2 rubrics linked to the assignment.
2. Indicate in the Default Scoring Rubric which rubric counts for the final grade. That is always the scoring rubric and never the conditional rubric.
3. Work with a separate column in the Gradebook
Another option is to create a separate column in the gradebook, where you can link the conditional rubric to. With this option, you have to open the conditional rubric in a separate tab, after you have already opened the work of the student. The advantage is that the Gradebook will show the score as well as meeting the requirements immediately.
You can read how to create a conditional rubric here.
The disadvantage of the separate column is that the submitted work (with linked content rubric) and the conditional rubric have to be opened separate from each other. This means that you have to work in two different tabs at the same time when grading students.
Follow the steps described below to order the conditions in this way.
Choose again for New and now for Item.
Choose Numeric.
Do you want to work with a rubric that contains the conditional requirements? Then continue reading.
- Enter a title.
- Choose the category you have created.
- Add the amount of points (in this example we use 3 points because the conditional requirements rubric contains three requirements).
- Choose a Grade Scheme: "Voldoet aan voorwaarden".
- In case you want to use a rubric, like in this example, add the rubric here.
- Click Save and Close.
You have now created an extra column in the Gradebook with which you can assess the conditional requirements. In case you need to, you can reorder the columns via More actions > Reorder.
If you do not want to work with a rubric for conditions, but you do want a column for conditions, it is possible to do so. You can the, for example, choose a Pass/fail item. When a student meets the requirements, you select Pass, and otherwise you select Fail.
You can go through the steps described above, but will not link a rubric.
Conditional rubric
It is possible to put the conditional requirements in a separate rubric. This can be done for the second and third way of working. For the way that was described above, it is not necessary.
- Go to Course Tools > Rubrics in the navigation bar of your course.
- Click on New Rubric.
3. Put Scoring to points.
4. The amount of points in Niet voldaan (fail) is 0 points, and for Voldaan (pass) is 1.
5. Click on Close.
