With the Brightspace HTML editor you can add different types of content to your course, such as:
- text and images
- video and audio files
- quicklinks and urls
- formulas
- HTML codes
The Brightspace HTML editor resembles a text window with a bar of formatting options. You can find the editor in several Activities, such as Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions and Surveys. You use the HTML editor in here to add instructions or a description to the Activity, for example. You can also add a text or file to a (sub)module in Content using the HTML editor.
When you insert media files or a URL, you create a link to this content rather than a physical copy. This means that:
- the content you add is not saved in the HTML editor. You must therefore have stored this content (for example an image or video) elsewhere (internally or externally);
- the HTML editor will not properly display the added content when you remove the content from where you saved it.
How do I use the editor?
- At the top you can give the topic a title and optionally select a template with Select Template.
- Switch between Hidden or Visible to make the file (in)visible to students.
- Click on the three dots so that all functions of the editor become visible. You can make the editor fullscreen with the extend icon.
- In the first part of the bar you can (from left to right):
- Choose whether you want to type paragraph text, different types of heading text or a quote;
- Use bold, italic, or underlined text;
- Choose the color of the text;
- Choose the alignment of the text;
- Create lists.
5. In the second part of the bar you can click (from left to right) on:
- Insert Stuff: With this function you can add ePortfolio files, Kaltura videos and web links, among other things.
- Link icon: Here you can add links to parts of the course, such as assignments, checklists and discussions. You can also add external links.
- Image icon: Here you can add images from your computer, the internet or uploaded images within the course.
- Plus icon: Below you'll find Formulas, Tables, Attributes, Divider, Emoji, Symbols, Insert Practice, Insert Element, and Insert Code options.
6. In the third part of the bar you can choose the font and font size (Lato is the recommended font. This font is used everywhere within Brightspace).
7. The fourth and last part of the bar contains the functions:
Format painter: With this function you can copy the current formatting you have set for selected text (for example in terms of font size, typeface, bold or italics) and apply it to other parts of the text.
Accessibility Checker: Check whether there are any limitations in your text that, for example, limit visually impaired people in reading the text.
Word Count: Here you can view the number of words, characters and paragraphs of your text.
Preview: Preview the text.
Source Code: Here you can view the source code of your file.
Undo and Redo: Undo or redo changes.
8. Click Save and Close to publish the content and close the editor.
- If you copy text in the Editor from Word, the formatting of the text (font, font size, text color, etc.) is not adopted. The structure for headings, bullets, and tables is copied.
- The editor is almost the same everywhere in Brightspace, but if you open it by clicking Create a File under Content, you have the additional option Select Template. You can insert a template here to automatically format the new topic/file. You can choose one of the fixed Brightspace templates for this, but you can also choose a file that you have previously created in Brightspace. Templates make it easy to reuse formatted/structured content that you need repeatedly in a course in different (sub)modules. That way you only have to format the content once.
- A number of HTML templates are available for Saxion, making it easier to organize your education according to the Saxion course template.
