What are release conditions and how do I use them?

What are release conditions?

You use release conditions to set conditions for when a student gets access to certain course components. For example:

  • Students cannot take the week two quiz until they have a score of 50% or higher on the week one quiz.
  • Students can only respond to a discussion forum if they have created a thread themselves.
  • Students cannot see the final assignment until they have submitted the partial assignments.

You can attach multiple release conditions to a component. For example:

  • Students cannot see the final assignment until they have submitted the partial assignments and achieved a score of 50% or higher on the quizzes.

You can also add multiple release conditions to a component and set that students only have to meet one of these conditions. For example:

  • Students will not be able to access week two learning materials until they have submitted week one assignments or achieved a score of 50% or higher on the quizzes or created a discussion thread.

You always connect a release condition to the activity you want to release. For example, if you want students to be able to see assignment B only if they have passed assignment A, set the release condition for assignment B. This is invisible to the student until he or she has met the release condition (assignment A completed with a pass).

Where do you use release conditions?

You can attach release conditions to almost all parts in Brightspace. Below you can see which release conditions you can use for each component.

As a student you can see this Activity/Content topic if you...

    • ... have not submitted the quiz (No completed quiz attempt).
  • Surveys:
    • ... handed in the survey (Completed survey attempt).
    • ... have not submitted the survey (No completed survey attempt).

If you use release conditions, communicate this to your students at the beginning of the course. This way they know that not all course content is yet accessible to them, they themselves are responsible for going through the entire course and unlocking new parts with completed parts. If you do not make the principle of release conditions clear to students, you may create wrong expectations in them, because the course eventually turns out to consist of more parts and/or assignments than they had at the beginning of the course (based on the visible content at that time).

How do you set release conditions?

You can set release conditions for Activities (and Surveys), grades and for Content topics:

  • For the Activities (and grades) you will find the release conditions under the Restrictions tab, for example for an Assignment. You will see the Release Conditions heading.
  • For Content you will find the release conditions under Edit Properties In-place.
  • For example, when making a new assignment, you will find the release conditions on the right side.
  • Click Create new to create and add a new release condition.
  • Click on Add Existing to add previously created release conditions to the part.
  1. Choose which type of condition students must meet in order to see this component (in the example, a certain score on a grade item).
  2. Fill in the details of the condition.
  3. Click on Create.

• Then set whether the student must meet all the conditions or one of the conditions.

Advice on release conditions

If you plan to make (a lot of) use of release conditions, it is important to take the following practical matters into account:

  • Set release conditions before students can access your course; that gives you time to check that all release conditions are working properly by carefully checking them all again.
  • Avoid unnecessary release conditions; if you use too many release conditions, Brightspace can make it increasingly difficult to load your pages.
  • Avoid circular release conditions that students cannot meet. For example, if you require students to view document A before posting to the discussion, and then require students to post to the discussion before viewing document A, it becomes impossible for students to meet course requirements. comply. Therefore, keep track of which release condition you attach to which course component.
  • Once created release conditions are saved in the course. This is useful if you want to reuse complex release conditions.
