Notifications are the email notifications you receive of updates in a course. It is therefore not about the alerts in Brightspace itself (such as uploaded files or submitted assignments). You can switch on and off for which courses and for which course components you receive notifications by e-mail.
You can also watch this video.
Students can also choose whether they want to receive notifications by email. Teachers have no influence on this. It is a personal setting within the student's Brightspace account.
We recommend informing your students about this setting if you regularly use Announcements to communicate with students.
- Click on your name or your initials/profile picture in the minibar.
- Click Notifications.
Set notifications
- Under Contact Methods, enter the e-mail address at which you want to receive notifications (so you do not change your e-mail address in the system). Brightspace automatically uses your Saxion email address, because it is linked to your Brightspace account. If you want to change this, click Change your email settings, enter the desired email address and click Save.
- Under Summary of Activity, select whether you want to receive a summary of notifications from all courses on a daily (Daily) or weekly (Weekly) basis. If so, you can set a time when you will receive the summary. If you do not set this, you will receive the e-mail automatically at 0:00.
- Under Instant Notifications, tick which activities you want to receive notifications from. This applies to all courses, unless you exclude courses under Exclude Some Courses.
- Click Save to save your changes.
When you are a new user of Brightspace, notifications for new and changed Announcements are enabled by default. You can turn this off yourself by removing the check marks in the menu above.
Customize notifications
- Under Customize Notifications, check whether you want to receive grades from Grades and whether you want to receive notifications of future courses.
- Under Exclude Some Courses, select which courses you don't want to receive notifications for. Click on Manage course exclusions and click on the cross behind the name of the course(s) for which you do not want to receive notifications. Click Exclude All Courses to not receive notifications from any course (also useful if you have many courses and only want to receive notifications from one or a few courses). If you previously turned off a course's notifications and now want to turn them back on, find the name of the course and click the restart-notifications icon. Click Restore excluded courses to reactivate notifications for all courses.
You will make many of the changes and updates for which you can set notifications yourself. The reason you do have the option to set notifications for everything is that students have the same options for notifications as instructors. These notifications are probably more relevant to them than to you as an instructor.
