The media icons
In the HTML editor you can insert various (external) media, such as images and video and audio files. You can also add links to other parts of Brightspace or to an external source.
In the top bar in the editor you will see three icons. Here you will find the options to add different types of media.
- Insert Stuff: add an image, video or audio file or link to an external source (including Google Drive, Slideshare, etc.). You can also upload media from Kaltura here, add links or record a video with your webcam and add it directly.
- Insert Quicklink: add a link to another part of your Brightspace course or to an external source.
- Insert Image: easily add an image from your computer, from elsewhere in Brightspace or from the internet.
Insert Stuff
You can use Insert Stuff to add video and audio files from your computer, from elsewhere in the course, from Kaltura or from an external source. You can also easily record and add a video message.
- Click Insert Stuff.
You can add files to a (sub)module by using Upload Files or by using insert stuff in the editor. To do this, click on Upload/Create in the desired (sub)module and then on Create a File, instead of Upload Files. The difference between the two is that with Create a File you create a text page/web page, where you link to the files in a running text. Via Upload Files the topic is not a text file, but directly the file you upload. So it depends on how you want to display the file(s) which way you can use best.
Then choose from which location you want to add the file:
- Click on My Computerto find and add a file on your computer.
- Then click Choose File to locate the file in your computer's folder structure.
- Click Upload.
- A message appears saying that these files are being saved to Manage Files.
- Adjust the settings if necessary and click on Insert.
- Click on Course Offering Filesto find a file that you have used elsewhere in your course in Brightspace (or that you haven't used yet, but is in Manage Files) and add it here.
- Then find the right part in the folder structure of your course and select it.
- Click Next.
- Adjust the settings and click Insert.
- Click Video Note to record and add a video message.
- Click Video Note Searchto find and add a previously recorded video message.
- Enter one or more search terms under Search Notes and click Search.
- Select the desired video.
- Click Next and then click Insert.
- Click on Insert Link to add a link to an external video (for example to a YouTube video).
- Paste the url into the test box and click Next.
- Adjust the settings and click Insert. Note: It depends on the source whether you can adjust settings
- Click Enter Embed Code to embed an external video in your message (for example, in addition to placing a link to a YouTube video, you can also use the embed code. You can also use the embed code to link to Slideshare). Note: When embedding a video, the video is still with the external source. So you don't save the video itself in Brightspace.
- Paste the embed code into the text box and click Next for a preview.
- Then click Insert.
- Click Embed Kaltura Media to add a video from Kaltura.
Add a video from Kaltura
- Click Insert Stuff.
- Click Add Kaltura Media
- Click Embed on the video you want to add.
- You navigate to the next screen, in which you see a preview of your video. Click Insert to add the video.

Record a video message
- You need a computer with a webcam and/or microphone to record video or audio messages. In addition, you may first have to give permission in your browser for Brightspace to use the webcam and/or microphone. A pop-up will automatically appear in which you can give this permission.
- Do you only want to record audio? You can record sound without connecting the webcam.
- Click Insert Stuff.
- Click Video Note.
- Click New Recording. You will see the image you are recording in the screen. Stop the recording by clicking End Recording.
- You can also add a file from your computer instead of recording a video by clicking Upload File.
- Click Next.
- Add a title.
- Add a description.
- Click Next.
- You will see a preview of your video. If you first see the above message, click on Refresh Preview to load and view the preview.
- Click Insert.
- Click Save and Close.
Add an existing video message
Click Insert Stuff.
Click Video Note Search.
- Enter the title of your video message in the search bar.
- Click Search. By clicking Search without entering a search query, you will get an overview of all saved recorded video messages.
- Select the video message.
- Click Next.
- Click Insert to add the existing video message. Then click Save and Close.
Insert an image
You can insert images via Insert Stuff, but also via Insert Image. You will then only see the options with which you can add an image, making it easier to find the right insertion option.
- Click Insert Image.
- Click My Computerto find a file on your computer and add it.
- Then click Choose File to locate the file in your computer's folder structure.
- Click Add.
- Add alternative text and click OK.
- Click URL to add a link to an external image.
- Paste the url in the test box and click Add.
- Add alternative text and click OK.
- Click Course Offering Files to find a file you used elsewhere in your course in Brightspace (or that you haven't used yet, but is in Manage Files) and add it here.
- Then find the correct part in the folder structure of your course and select it.
- Click on Add.
- Add an alternative text and click OK.
The downside of using a link to an external resource is that if the external link changes, the link in your course will no longer work.
- After inserting the image you can adjust it, for example rotate it 90 degrees, by selecting the image. Then click Save and Close.
Settings
When adding a file, in some cases you will+ be given the option to adjust settings. This involves adding a link name, an alternative text and determining the display size of the video or image. You have these options when adding a file from your computer (My Computer), from Brightspace (Course Offering Files) and sometimes when inserting a link (Insert Link).
- Link Text: This is the text contained in your message that links to the external source.
- Alternative Text: This is the text that will be displayed if your image cannot be displayed, for example because the internet connection is too slow. The alternative text is also important for the visually impaired. So put a short description of the image here. If the image contains no information, check This image is decorative. Note: You can only enter alternative text when adding an image. When adding an image via Insert Link (i.e. via the url of the image), you can also add a link text in addition to the alternative text.
- Lock aspect ratio: Keeps the video/image size settings.
- Width: Specify how wide the video/image should be.
- Height: Specify how high the video/image should be.
- Auto Start: Check this option if you want a video to start playing automatically. Note: You only get this option if you upload a video from your computer.
Click Refresh Preview if you want to see the changes.
