How do I use groups?

Groups

Groups allows you to divide students in your course into smaller groups for administrative or pedagogical reasons, with a maximum number of 200 students per group. You can choose whether to divide all students or a certain number into groups and whether you want to grade their work by group or individually.

With Groups you can:

  • Making it possible for students to work as a project group on assignments such as a presentation or paper.
  • Create peer feedback groups to allow students to learn from each other's work.
  • Split large tutorials or lecture groups into smaller groups for a specific day of the week.
  • Create discussion groups based on a specific group topic.
  • Create groups for students with special educational needs (for example, an honors group for students who want an extra challenge or a group for students who need extra guidance).
  • Create a group for each student so they can create and write a blog.

The following items can be given to each group:

  • A Locker (a group-specific digital storage space in which a group can share files digitally without the intervention of other students).
  • A Discussion thread.
  • An Assignment.

Students can be enrolled in multiple groups at the same time. You can decide whether the groups are created and filled automatically by Brightspace or whether you let students register themselves in a self-selected group. This allows students to work on assignments within their designated group, receive additional assignments through their honors group, and discuss a specific topic of interest in a self-selected group.
