Did you know that you need to adjust Assignment settings when students need to submit a video and/or audio file? Below you can see how to do that.
Preparing an Assignment for video/audio file submissions only
In most submissions, students will be asked to submit a document. You then create an Assignment following these steps and set the settings under Submission & Completion > Submission Type to File submission. However, that default setting is wrong when a student is required to submit a video or audio file.
For an Assignment where a video or audio file must be submitted, follow the steps below (after creating the Assignment):
1. Under Submission Type, select Text submission.
2. In the instruction field, add an instructional video on how to submit a video. To do so, click Insert Stuff.
3. Then choose Embed Kaltura Media.
4. Search for the video 'Upload and submit your video in Brightspace' click Embed and then Insert.
Why Text submission?
You may now be wondering why you should choose the Text submission setting. After all, this is a video or audio file and not a text to be submitted, right?
Here's how it works: choosing Text submission disables the ability for students to upload a file from their own computer. The student must now choose a file to be submitted from the Kaltura Media files via the text field and Insert Stuff.
So in this way, he/she is forced to submit a properly compressed video via Kaltura, as opposed to submitting a large video file directly from their own computer.
Preparing an Assignment for submission of both a 'normal' file and a video/audio file
Of course, it sometimes happens that not only a video or audio file has to be submitted, but a document has to be submitted as well. In that case the setting Text submission is not sufficient. After all, that turns off the option for students to submit a document.
In such a case, leave the setting on File submission. However, it is then EXTRA important to properly instruct students on the proper way to submit a video or audio file. In such a case, be sure to include the instructional video on how to upload and submit a video in Brightspace!
Tip: When only one other file needs to be submitted besides the video or audio file, select the One file setting. That way, you prevent students from also uploading the video or audio file from their computer (instead of Kaltura).
